Dining out is not just for special occasions anymore. Instead it has become part of our everyday lifestyle. Americans spend more money and more calories dining out today than ever before. Nearly half eat out on a typical day and many more eat out several times a week. The more meals eaten away from home, the more difficult it is to follow a healthy eating style.
Restaurant menus don’t often focus heavily on the fruit, vegetables, and fat-free or lowfat dairy products that are the foundations of a DASH eating plan. In addition, restaurant meals can be overloaded with hidden excesses – excess calories, excess fat, excess sodium, and excess portion sizes.
The Good News- it is possible to dine out and still follow the DASH eating plan. Most restaurants offer at least a small selection of great tasting, healthy choices. Moderation and common sense are the keys to successful DASH dining. Keep the focus on what you can have (instead of what you can’t) and you will be able to enjoy a meal out.
